We cannot become human beings without being dependent on others; and as human beings we will not become mature, not free, if we do not renounce others and rely on ourselves. Individual and community - this tense relationship must be constantly redefined. How much individuality can the community tolerate? And how much community does the individual need?
About the person
Rüdiger Safranski, born in 1945, studied philosophy, German studies, history and art history and is currently an honorary professor at the Institute of Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin. From 2002 to 2012, he co-hosted the ZDF program “Das philosophische Quartett” with Peter Sloterdijk. He has received numerous awards for his work, which has been translated into many languages. 2021 saw the publication of “Being alone. A philosophical challenge” (2021).
