We are living in uncertain times these days. Sometimes the future no longer delivers what it promises, then again the past gives no rest and returns in long-outdated ideologies. Many of the utopian energies of the past may have rightly exhausted themselves. But in times in which visions of social coexistence are increasingly drawing on times believed to be past, such energies are missing more than ever.

About the person

Peter Neumann, born 1987, studied philosophy, politics and economics in Jena and Copenhagen. Doctorate on the concept of time in German idealism. Editor of the ZEIT features section since 2021. Most recently published the non-fiction books “Tierra del Fuego. A journey into the long century of utopias 1883-2020” (2022)
and “Jena 1800. The Republic of Free Spirits” (2018) as well as the poetry collection “areale & tage” (2018)
