Artistic freedom is a fundamental right - and the subject of fierce disputes time and again. In political terms, the question arises as to the conditions under which it can unfold and when limits should be placed on it. In terms of aesthetics, the question is whether there is such a thing as a specific experience of artistic freedom. And what do individual artists or even artificial intelligence actually do with their freedom or lack of freedom?

Julia Voss, born in 1974, is an art critic, art historian and curator. She is the author of the bestselling biography “Hilma af Klint. ‘Astonishing Humanity’” (2020) and co-curator of the exhibition “documenta. Politics and Art”, which was shown at the German Historical Museum in Berlin in 2021/22. Until 2017, she was head of the art section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
