What distinguishes humans and animals is the subject of ongoing debate in the natural sciences and humanities. Is the human being just an animal? Are animals also human? What connects them? What separates them? These fundamental questions not only touch on our understanding of nature and culture; they also determine both how we understand ourselves and the coexistence of humans and animals, as well as our relationship to our shared environment.
